Iron Studies
A panel measuring serum iron, ferritin, and related markers to assess iron levels and storage in the body.
This is educational information, not a diagnosis. Only a doctor reviewing your full report and history can properly interpret your result.

What It Is
Iron studies typically include serum iron, ferritin (the body's iron storage marker), TIBC (total iron-binding capacity), and transferrin saturation, read together rather than as single numbers.
Why It Matters
Because iron is essential for oxygen transport in the blood, both low iron (a common cause of fatigue and anaemia) and excess iron can affect long-term health, and ferritin in particular can be raised by inflammation as well as by iron stores.
Typical Reference Range
Ferritin reference ranges are often cited roughly between 20-250 ng/mL for men and somewhat lower for women, though exact cutoffs and interpretation depend heavily on the full panel and clinical context.
What Can Affect Your Results
- Dietary iron intake and absorption
- Menstrual blood loss
- Pregnancy
- Chronic inflammation, which can raise ferritin independent of iron stores
- Underlying gastrointestinal conditions
When It's Typically Checked
Iron studies are checked when investigating fatigue or suspected anaemia, and are sometimes monitored proactively for those with heavy periods or plant-based diets.
